🇬🇧 Paris has 20 arrondissements and 80 quartiers, and each area has its own personality. The Eiffel Tower is, of course, one of the city’s great experiences: you can go up to the second floor or all the way to the top, and it is worth booking in advance; a ticket to the top by elevator currently costs €36.70.
The Louvre deserves several hours to explore, not only for the Mona Lisa but also for masterpieces such as the Venus de Milo and the Winged Victory of Samothrace; the Musée d’Orsay is a special stop for art lovers, with works by Monet, Renoir, Degas and Van Gogh.
It is also worth walking along the Champs-Élysées from Place de la Concorde to the Arc de Triomphe and visiting Galeries Lafayette Haussmann, where you can shop and also go up to the rooftop for panoramic views of Paris.
Another way to discover the city is by taking a boat cruise along the Seine, including options with lunch or dinner on board, while enjoying some of Paris’s landmarks from the river.
Notre-Dame Cathedral, on the Île de la Cité, has reopened after its restoration, and admission is free; you can also book a free time slot online to avoid long waits.
Nearby, the Île Saint-Louis has a much quieter atmosphere, with small streets, cafés and restaurants, making it a lovely place to walk along the Seine.
Montmartre is another neighbourhood I particularly enjoyed: its cobbled streets lead up to the Sacré-Cœur Basilica and Place du Tertre, where local artists paint and sell their work; on Sundays, the area becomes even livelier.
To get around Paris, the metro is fast and convenient, while buses are a good way to enjoy the city along the way; a single metro, train or RER ticket currently costs €2.55.
If you have more time, Versailles is about 20 kilometres from Paris and makes an easy day trip to visit the palace and its gardens.
Paris is a city to enjoy not only through its famous landmarks, but also by walking through its neighbourhoods, stopping at a café or simply crossing a bridge over the Seine without looking at the clock.
